Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Biochemistry

This is the branch of science concerned with the chemical and physicochemical processes that occur within living organisms. Students in this major study life from the molecular level to the most complex organisms, and learn how to improve health, fight disease, and work toward scientific breakthroughs in all areas of the life sciences. The undergraduate biochemistry curriculum is designed to provide a solid background in chemistry and the physical sciences, as well as in the biological sciences.

Consequently, biochemistry is an especially versatile major giving undergraduates many options when they complete their BS degree. A biochemistry major provides a strong background for entering graduate school in a variety of fields, and biochemistry majors often go on to graduate school or to professional schools such as medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry. Biochemistry majors excel in biomedical professional schools because of their strong background in the basic sciences. In addition, a wide variety of job opportunities is open to biochemistry majors with a BS degree. Many find rewarding careers working in laboratories as research scientists, forensic scientists and technicians in clinical, governmental and university laboratories. Biochemists are also employed by diverse companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, food and scientific equipment industries.

Biology is the study living organisms. Biologists usually specialize in a particular group of plants or animals and may study the origin, development, structure, life cycle, or physiology of one species or the ecological relationships between several species. The Department of Biology offers two undergraduate degree programs in biology, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Bachelor of Science (BS). The BA degree in Biology, through the availability of a large number of electives, gives students maximum flexibility in earning a biology degree. The BA program is recommended for students with broad educational objectives or who intend to pursue further education in areas such as allied health professions, professional schools, or teaching certification. The BS degree in Biology is designed for students to obtain a comprehensive, solid foundation in the major branches of Biology. This degree plan is recommended for students preparing for graduate programs in biological sciences or any professional programs in health and medical sciences such as medical, dental or veterinary schools.

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical engineering is a diverse, multidisciplinary field that uses engineering, science, and technology to solve medical problems and other problems involving living systems. Biomedical engineers design artificial hearts and hips; with engineers in other fields, they develop and maintain the systems that keep astronauts alive during spaceflight; they manage the diagnostic instruments that monitor patients in emergency rooms and during surgery; and they have the option of going directly into medical school. The program in biomedical engineering is designed to prepare students to work in concert with physicians and life scientists to solve a wide variety of medical and biological problems.

Biomedical sciences is a broad field of applied biology that is directed toward understanding health and disease. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong four-year education that emphasizes versatility of the graduate in the biological and medical sciences. A highly effective counseling program assists students with the development of an individualized approach and course package that orients and prepares the students for entry into the medical, allied health field, or graduate program of their choice. Such an approach enhances their educational experiences, improves their placement in professional and graduate programs, and facilitates their entry into the biomedical science job market.

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Chemistry

Chemists study and analyze the properties, structure, composition and reactions of natural and synthetic substances and examine the underlying chemical principals. In the next century, advances in chemistry will profoundly impact our world. Chemist’s abilities to understand and manipulate molecules will radically change our industries, our health and our interactions with the environment. Chemistry is at the heart of the knowledge needed for the biotechnology revolution to succeed.

In addition to the traditional BS degree (which allows for optional minors) and the traditional BA degree (minor required), the Department of Chemistry offers five tracks to guide students in their selection of electives for particular career paths in biological chemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical education. These tracks include Biological Chemistry (BA)Chemical Education-Secondary (BA), Environmental Chemistry (BA), Biological Chemistry (BS), and Environmental Chemistry (BS). Career paths chosen by recent chemistry graduates include: Medical, Dental, Vet or Pharmacy School, Law School, Forensic Chemistry, Graduate School, Teaching, Industrial Positions, and Military/Government Careers.

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Community Health

The Bachelor of Science in Community Health prepares and educates students to serve as community health educators and promoters in a variety or government and private health agencies, clinical settings, nonprofit organizations, volunteer agencies and other community organizations. This program is unique in that it offers a wide range of approved electives permitting the student to develop a program according to his or her needs and interests. Each graduate will have knowledge enabling them to communicate health and health education needs, concerns and resources.

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Ecology & Conservation Biology

The B.S. in Ecology and Conservation Biology (ECCB) emphasizes the acquisition of fundamental ecological knowledge and its application to biodiversity conservation, environmental health, and the management of complex systems, such as interactions involving aspects of ecology from genes to ecosystems, landscapes, hydrology, and climate. Four tracks are offered to provide flexibility in preparing for a given career path: Ecology and Conservation Biology, Ecoinformatics, Forest Resources, and Vertebrate Zoology.

The Ecology and Conservation Biology track is designed to meet the needs of students interested in pursuing careers with natural resource agencies, conservation and environmental organizations, environmental consulting firms, and education and research institutions as well as a graduate degree in natural sciences. Students enrolled in this track gain an understanding of the core body of knowledge and acquire the tools for understanding issues related to conserving, managing, and restoring species, habitats, and ecosystems in ecological concepts, ecological practices, human-environmental interactions, and biodiversity exploration and conservation. This track accomplishes this by offering a diversity of courses, including higher-level electives that allow students to tailor their education to fit their interests, including the option to become certified through organizations such as the Ecological Society of America and the Society for Ecological Restoration. Students completing this track will have a strong background in ecosystem functioning, field experience, human and ethical dimensions, organism biology, and quantitative applications.

Ecoinformatics is an emerging field, and this track prepares graduates to become experts in integrating digital and information technologies, such as GPS (geographic position system), satellite and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) imagery, and advanced field sensors with ecological data analysis in complex ecosystems to detect, evaluate, and predict ecological patterns, disturbances, and processes. The Ecoinformatics track provides students with training in theories and applications of ecological data analysis, natural resources and ecological modeling, and spatial information sciences that will prepare them for handling complex and interdisciplinary ecological datasets and understanding contemporary environmental challenges. Students completing this track will have the ability to use advanced technologies to collect data from genomic to landscape levels and beyond. A diverse curriculum provides students with the ability to perform spatial analysis, ecological modeling and other quantitative methods. This track prepares students for careers with natural resource agencies, environmental consulting firms, conservation organizations, and graduate degrees that require knowledge and ability to transform data into ecological information useful for solving environmental problems and informing policy and decision making.

The Forest Resources track builds on the ecology and conservation foundation of the ECCB major core. As such, it prepares students for a broad array of career opportunities, from that of a professional forester or natural resources specialist with government natural resource agencies, forest resources companies, conservation and environmental organizations, environmental or forestry consulting firms, urban forestry companies, and agencies. This track also prepares students to pursue a graduate degree in areas related to forest ecology and natural resources. Students obtaining a degree in Ecology and Conservation Biology. The Forest Resources track is a Society of American Foresters (SAF)-accredited curriculum in forestry. Students obtaining a degree in Ecology and Conservation Biology gain an understanding of ecological concepts and practices, human-environmental interactions, and principles of conservation. Students in the ECCB Forest Resources track also learn important concepts in forest biology and ecology, assessment, and management and are exposed to exciting areas of increasing importance such as climate change, fire, remote sensing, forest insects and diseases, and forest genetics. Students may use free electives to broaden their experience outside of natural resources or to add additional courses of interest within the other ECCB tracks, including study abroad.

The Vertebrate Zoology track is tailored specifically for those ECCB students with a deep interest in vertebrates, their diversity, ecology, and conservation. This track permits the inclusion of courses specifically required by schools of veterinary medicine (pre-vet program). The Vertebrate Zoology track capitalizes on the collective experience of ECCB faculty in the areas of vertebrate ecology, evolution, genetics, anatomy, physiology, and behavior to provide a comprehensive understanding of vertebrate biology and ecology that will prepare students for professional studies, as well as careers within government and non-government agencies associated with the conservation and management of vertebrates. In addition to core courses in ecology and conservation, ECCB students enrolled in this track complete coursework in vertebrate ecology, diversity, and evolution and may choose to enroll in national or international field courses that focus on vertebrates, including their collection and identification. Students on this track may also use free electives to personalize or broaden their experience or tailor to meet certification requirements for many vertebrate-focused professional societies (e.g., American Fisheries Society or The Wildlife Society).

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Health

The goals of the curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science in Health are to more effectively develop literate, informed professionals capable of making the world healthier and more humane. Students receive a general education through a broad exposure to information. They also receive a specialized education through coursework designed to help them develop as a professional, expand their knowledge and skills related to health education and prepare them for professional practice. The curriculum in health offers one concentration/option: the Allied Health track.

The Allied Health option gives students a strong background in health that serves them well if they choose to pursue additional schooling in an allied health area. This concentration provides an opportunity for students to take prerequisite courses for professional allied health schools as electives while receiving a background in the health education field.  Students select electives from a list of prerequisites for specific professional schools such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, etc.

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Psychology

Psychology is the study of the mind and human behavior. This discipline works in research and administration to help understand people, their capabilities, traits, and behavior and to explain their needs. Students majoring in psychology may earn either the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. The psychology coursework is identical; however the BA degree requires courses in a foreign language whereas the BS degree requires additional coursework in physical and biological sciences. Students who study psychology are prepared to enter a variety of employment opportunities (such as business, human resources, education, etc.) as well as many graduate and professional programs (such as medical school, law, psychology, etc.).

 

Texas A&M Pre Med Majors – Public Health

Public health is the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. Public health professionals assess factors influencing health in individuals, communities and populations; plan effective programs and interventions; design evaluations for those interventions; and successfully manage the implementation of those programs. The BSPH program is based on a philosophy of health promotion and disease prevention, to improve the quality of life of individuals, families and communities. The BSPH discipline focuses on four areas:

  1. the multiple determinants of health, including biological, environmental, sociocultural, health service, and economic factors,
  2. identification of scientific data, tools of informatics, and other information for identifying indicators of health status and health disparities and assessing the well-being of a community,
  3. addressing major local, national, and global health challenges, and
  4. designing public health approaches and interventions that improve health outcomes, population health and well-being.

The Bachelor of Science in Public Health degree program is more than a means to produce ready public health practitioners. It can complement or enrich a traditional biology-based pre-health degree plan for students intending professional education in medicine, nursing, allied health or other health professions. Notably the program establishes a specific entry-level baccalaureate degree in the Public Health academic pathway which, until recently, had started with a master’s degree.
